Movie Review – G I Joe

Back in the day, when we were brats, it was “GI Joe versus Cobra the enemy, fighting to save the day!” or some such theme song which got kids hooked and sold action figures. For us poor souls in India, GI Joe toys began trumping the He-Man toys, as (1) they were cheaper and (2) they could be put into a lot more poses than the He-Man figures.

So why do I talk about action figures instead of reviewing a movie? Well, it’s just so that you know that this review is by a fan.

Like all “first part-ers” this one comes with an “origin / beginning” aspect. The Cobra and the Joes are shown as being technologically superior to “our regular armed forces” who in fact get whipped really bad in their encounters. Main characters seem to be Stormshadow and Snake Eyes, and Baroness and Duke. The token romance is provided by Ripcord and Scarlett (?). The Joes are from around the world, but its the ‘americans’ who pull off all the bad ass stuff. Heavy duty is interesting too…

Thumbs up: Cool fight sequences! enjoy it as you go from one to another while you grumble about the story. Also, the flyboy saves the day in a cool jet, so score there too. Snake eyes is just about invincible. Baroness has infiltrated the Joes.

Thumbs down: The exo-suit chase is over done, looks like the Fx guys wanted to “do a superhero routine” in the movie so the throw in exo-suites for everything from superspeed, superstrength, invulnerability AND spiderman-like moves… ouch. Baroness has reformed. Cobra Commander gets captured (wtf?)

Watch it: if you are a action movie buff, or a GI Joe buff.

Avoid it: if you think action movies should have a shakespeare level-story or oscar winning performances from the lead cast (and not the special effects team)
